Idk, late to the party, but I feel like calling this a scam is a bit much. I think even with the limitations of gore tex etc., that you amazingly discussed and pointed out, I still have a jacket that is decently breathable, and decently waterproof, just not both at once. Yes, for prolonged trekking in wet conditions, there are better solutions, but for casual hiking and everyday use I am quite happy with the DWR jackets I have owned.

If you want the best rain gear that is both breathable and water repellent the solution is 6,000 years old. Two wool shirts the base layer shirt is a soft, thin merino wool Tees shirt soaked in a lanolin bath the outer layer is a tight weave wool shirt soaked in lanolin bat an than lanolin rubbed into the wool shirt. The outer shirt should be one size larger, pullover and fit loose with a hood. and cover the butt. Pattern stores sell the pattern. the shirt is called a Missouri boatman’s shirt. For best results felt the fabric before cutting out the pattern. Easy shirt to make. The version made in the 13 hundreds lasted two generations. and were always included in the Will. Mine is still going strong after 52 years. On You Tube learn how to add lanolin to all your wool clothing including scarves.
